Kenya Thiriku AA
Nyeri County, Kenya · 1,800 masl · Washed
Tasting Notes: Blackcurrant · Pomegranate · Molasses
Showcasing the exceptional character of Kenya’s Nyeri County, Thiriku Farmers Cooperative Society produces this distinctive single-factory coffee with remarkable clarity, sweetness, and consistency.
Thiriku is situated along the Nyeri–Giakanja–Ihithe road, in a lush highland region blessed with rich volcanic soils from the Aberdares. At around 1,800 metres above sea level, the combination of elevation, fertile soils, and favourable growing conditions provides an ideal environment for producing high-quality Arabica coffee.
The coffee is cultivated by a community of approximately 2,000 active members, with farmers growing a combination of SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, and Batian cultivars. Operating independently as a single-factory cooperative, Thiriku places strong emphasis on transparency, accountability, and consistency throughout the production process.
The society supports its farmers by sourcing agricultural inputs and maintaining a dedicated demonstration farm, helping to promote good agricultural practices and quality across the membership. This commitment has contributed to impressive results, with 89% of one recent harvest classified as premium grade.
The wet mill receives a smaller early crop between April and July, followed by the main harvest from October to December. Thiriku’s reputation for quality and farmer returns has been recognised through multiple awards, including trophies for being the highest payer and for winning the EAFCA Cup.
In the cup, expect the vibrant character associated with great Nyeri coffees: rich blackcurrant and pomegranate acidity balanced by the deep, dark sweetness of molasses.
