How to Deep Clean a Mythos 1 Grinder & Remove the Back Plate

A Complete Barista Maintenance Guide

The Victoria Arduino Mythos 1 is built for precision and consistency, but like any high-performance grinder, it needs regular deep cleaning to stay accurate and reliable.

A surface clean isn’t enough forever. Coffee oils, fines, and heat build-up inside the grinder can affect grind quality, temperature stability, and shot consistency. Removing the back plate allows you to properly clean internal components that are otherwise inaccessible.

In this guide, we walk through how and why to deep clean a Mythos 1, including safe back plate removal.

Why Deep Cleaning the Mythos 1 Matters

Over time, internal build-up can lead to:

  • ☕ Stale, muddy flavours

  • ⚙️ Inconsistent grind flow

  • 🌡️ Poor heat management

  • 🔧 Increased wear on moving parts

  • 👩🍳 Slower dial-in and wasted coffee

A proper deep clean restores performance and protects a serious piece of equipment.

How Often Should You Deep Clean?

We recommend:

  • Daily: Brush chute and wipe externals

  • Weekly: Remove hopper and clean burr chamber

  • Monthly (or as needed): Full deep clean with back plate removal

High-volume cafés may need this more frequently.

What You’ll Need

Before you start:

  • Grinder brush

  • Vacuum (recommended)

  • Clean, dry cloths

  • Screwdriver (for back plate removal)

  • Empty hopper

  • 15–20 minutes

⚠️ Always switch off and unplug the grinder before starting.

Step-by-Step: Mythos 1 Deep Clean

1. Empty the Hopper

  • Remove all beans

  • Run the grinder briefly to clear retained coffee

This prevents beans falling into the burr chamber during cleaning.

2. Remove the Hopper

  • Lift off the hopper

  • Wipe the inside to remove coffee oils

Old oils here can contaminate fresh coffee.

3. Access the Burr Chamber

  • Adjust the grinder coarser to release burr tension

  • Remove the top burr carrier (note your grind setting first)

Brush away loose grounds before moving on.

4. Remove the Back Plate

  • Unscrew and carefully remove the rear panel

  • Set screws aside safely

This exposes the internal fan, motor housing, and airflow pathways.

5. Clean Internal Components

  • Brush and vacuum accumulated coffee fines

  • Pay attention to:

    • Air vents

    • Fan area

    • Internal surfaces

⚠️ Do not use water or liquid cleaners internally.

6. Clean the Chute & Clump Crusher

  • Brush the grind chute thoroughly

  • Check the clump crusher for wear or blockages

  • Clean or replace if required

This step has a big impact on grind consistency.

7. Reassemble the Grinder

  • Refit the back plate securely

  • Reinstall burr carrier and hopper

  • Return grind setting to its original position

8. Test & Re-Dial In

  • Add fresh beans

  • Pull a test dose

  • Check grind flow and shot time

A clean grinder often needs a slight grind adjustment.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting to unplug the grinder

  • Using water or chemicals internally

  • Losing screws from the back plate

  • Not recalibrating grind after cleaning

  • Skipping deep cleans because “it still works”
